In the footsteps of Epworth Allen..and Bob Ross

I have long admired the paintings of Sheffield’s own Harry Epworth Allen. His sinuous, sensual tempera landscapes first caught my eye at the Graves Art Gallery. Derby Museum also has one but anyone wanting an overview of his works has to go looking on the internet because there is currently no book of his works in print. A recognised member of the Yorkshire Artists, he deserves to be so much more celebrated than he is.

Recently I was reminded of my intention to paint something with a nod to his style when, yes, you guessed it, I had another Bob Ross session with a friend.

During this last session Sarah painted a beautiful, slightly surreal sky of blues, yellows and pinks.

Beautiful Bob Ross sky

I thought: “I’m nicking that!” and went to dig out a stylised painting of Derwent Reservoir that I did a few years ago.

As it turned out my sky ended up nothing like Sarah’s but for now I really like this painting so will have to share it with you before I change my mind and shove it behind the sofa.
